Summer Team Trip to Saltaire

The HPA team ventured across the border to Saltaire, in Shipley, Yorkshire in June for this year’s Summer CPD day, where we experienced the unique architecture of this Victorian Industrial Village.

The day began with a visit to Salt’s Mill, a former textile mill and Grade II listed building, commissioned in 1853 by leading Industrialist Sir Titus Salt, which now houses a museum and art gallery. The historic Salt’s Mill building, and village of Saltaire within which it is situated, which was built to accommodate Salt’s Mill workers, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001 and is a great example of progressive 19th-century urban planning, featuring a landmark combination of quality housing, employment, recreation, educational facilities and social services

After spending some time inside the mill, the team then ventured into the village for a canal boat trip along a stretch of the Leeds and Liverpool canal to take in the external architecture of the neat stone village, reviewing developments within and surrounding the UNESCO site.

To round off the day, the team headed for a well-deserved meal at the SALT Beer Factory, an open-plan venue within the village, located in a former tram depot.

With a collaboration between old and new, as well as former industrial buildings being repurposed for a more modern audience, the trip gave the team a lot to discuss and think about. It proved to be a valuable experience for all, fostering our culture of learning and enjoying what we do.
