Salt Ayre Decarbonisation Initiative Featured on BBC
One of our most recently completed projects, Salt Ayre Leisure Centre, has been featured on BBC North West. The segment discussed the decarbonisation initiative behind the leisure centre’s redesign, with an interview conducted between Mike Stevens (BBC) and Elliott Grimshaw (Lancaster City Council).
This project was a multi-million pound investment for the Lancaster and Morecambe area, contributing to the Council’s ambitions to reduce C02 emissions by providing one of the first leisure facilities in the UK to fully achieve net carbon zero.

HPA helped facilitate the success of this project, by leading the team as Principal Designers after being approached initially to submit Planning Application drawings. Improvements to the original structure were a defining part of our design process, including replacing gas boilers with Air Source Heat Pumps, providing external LED lighting, and upgrading glazing to reduce energy consumption.
A solar farm was also constructed on a disused landfill site adjacent to the leisure centre, distributing electricity via direct wire. All of this contributed to Salt Ayre’s most recently received ASPE Award for ‘Best Climate Action or Decarbonisation Initiative.’
This BBC feature aired on Sunday Politics on the 16th of October 2022.
