Rooted in Autumn: How the Changing Seasons Complement The Treehouse at Another Place

As the Lake District canopy along Ullswater Lake shoreline shifts from summer to autumn, The Treehouse, designed by HPA Architects for Another Place and shortlisted in the Architects Journal Architecture Awards 2023, comes into its own, discreetly tucked into the oak, ash and yew treeline.

Commissioned as part of Another Place’s Outside collection, the intention of The Treehouse was always to foster a close relationship with nature, whilst retaining the pleasure of premium interior spaces.

Resting in Nature

Accessed by an elevated woodland walkway, the treetop hideaway is secluded by native trees to the rear, allowing guests to feel as though they are sleeping within the forest itself.

The position of The Treehouse means guests can also take advantage of the stunning Lake view within the environment of this immersive retreat, meaning that no matter what time of year it is, guests can enjoy the ever-changing seasons from the tranquility of this secluded space.

A Sustainable Treehouse Design

Autumn in the Lake District can often mean a sharp drop in temperature, allowing The Treehouse’s thermal design to shine. Constructed on a British timber frame using an eco-screw pile system, minimising the impact on existing trees, The Treehouse is powered by 100% renewable electricity and heated from the hotel’s Biomass boiler. The space also incorporates generous glazing, allowing the autumn sunshine to warm the space, reducing the reliance on artificial heating.

Existing as if it has grown out of its environment, the thoughtful and balanced use of Shou-Sugi-Ban cladding allows the form to recede, embedding the 70m² structure within its natural setting.

The Treehouse is a reminder that architecture is never static; it is a living extension of its environment, in this case, coming into its own when nature begins to slow down.
