Plans Submitted for Lancaster on Ice
As we continue to experience the soaring temperatures of a record-breaking summer, winter events may feel a long way off. Yet behind large-scale temporary attractions such as Lancaster On Ice, planning and preparation are very much a year-round undertaking.
We are delighted to share that a planning application has now been submitted for the return of Lancaster on Ice – with preparations already underway to bring this much-loved winter event back to the heart of the city. Held within the historic setting of Dalton Square, the seasonal ice rink transforms Lancaster’s civic space into a vibrant destination throughout the festive period. The proposal seeks approval for the ongoing operation of the event as a temporary ice rink and associated attractions, ensuring it can continue to welcome residents and visitors alike not only later this year, but for years to come.
A Longstanding Collaboration
HPA Architects have proudly supported Lancaster on Ice since its very beginning, working closely with the organisers to help shape and deliver the event year after year. What started as an ambitious local initiative has grown into a widely recognised attraction, becoming a key part of Lancaster’s winter calendar. Our role has evolved alongside the event. Over the years, we have provided architectural, planning and coordination support – helping to develop site layouts, ensure accessibility, and navigate the complexities of delivering a temporary structure within a sensitive and historic environment.
Designed for Its Setting
Dalton Square is not only a central public space but also one of Lancaster’s most important heritage settings, home to listed structures including the Queen Victoria Memorial and surrounding balustrades. Submitting a planning application in this context requires careful consideration of the site’s character and significance. The proposals have been developed to respect this historic setting while allowing the square to be reimagined as a welcoming, seasonal destination during the winter months. As with previous years, the design prioritises accessibility, safety, and thoughtful integration with the surrounding environment – ensuring the event can be enjoyed by as many people as possible while protecting the square’s heritage.
