Planning Permission Granted: Extension To Care Home To Provide Affordable Rented Housing in A National Landscape
HPA and Abbeyfield Silverdale have received unanimous planning approval in the National Landscape of Silverdale and Arnside. Planning Permission has been granted to create an affordable rented housing solution at Cove House; a registered charity officially known as The Abbeyfield Silverdale Society, providing residential care to older people in Silverdale. The application was welcomed by Councillors who expressed excitement and need for this type of rural housing.
The permitted extension will create 10 new bedrooms, housed in a 2-storey specialist block linked to the original building via a contemporary glazed link, where the communal dining and living spaces will be located, looking out onto the bay.

The extension will provide an intermediate level of care – differing from the existing provision – to help make transitions between independent living and residential care easier. The Abbeyfield Society (Silverdale) further committed to becoming a registered social housing provider, to allow these homes to be let on an affordable basis.
Design consideration was given to maintaining the privacy of all residents and ensuring natural light levels will be provided throughout. The design also ensured the development will be fully accessible, considering careful details to allow for a variety of needs for residents.
HPA are proud to have a long-established relationship working with the Abbeyfield Society, having been appointed as their Architects in the 1990s, and look forward to progressing the project to build the next phase at Cove House.
