National Mentoring Day: Supporting the Next Generation

National Mentoring Day  – celebrated annually on 27th October – is the perfect opportunity to acknowledge the value of mentorship in architecture and the role it plays in developing both people and practice. We support this initiative because we know that learning from each other – at every stage of our careers – makes us better architects and colleagues.

Why Mentoring Matters in Architecture

Architecture is a profession built on collaboration, creativity, and continuous learning. The journey from student to qualified architect is long and challenging, and the guidance of experienced mentors can make all the difference. Mentoring helps bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world practice, offering emerging professionals the support and insight they need to thrive.

A Learning Organisation

We don’t see learning as a box to tick. Our team includes people at all stages of their careers, and we encourage everyone to share what they know – whether it’s about design, regulations, or how to manage a challenging project. We support this through:

Investing in the Next Generation

We’re committed to giving our Architectural Assistants real opportunities to learn. We support apprenticeships and work experience placements, and we work with local schools and universities to help demystify the profession. Our aim is to give our team trainees a realistic view of what it’s like to work in architecture, and to support them as they find their own path.

Barrow Sixth Form student Shannon recently spent a week with us prior to committing to study at University, and said of her time with HPA, “it has given me a deeper understanding of how architectural designs are implemented in real-world settings. The experience also helped me appreciate the importance of collaboration and communication in architectural projects. I was able to observe how architects work with engineers, clients, and contractors to bring designs to life. This work experience was invaluable and has inspired me to pursue a career in architecture with greater confidence and enthusiasm.”

We know that technical skills are only part of the story. We encourage our team to develop confidence, curiosity, and a sense of responsibility for the built environment.

Celebrating National Mentoring Day

On National Mentoring Day, we celebrate the mentors who have shaped our journeys and the mentees who inspire us with their fresh perspectives, and encourage all employers to share their experience – whether formally or informally.
