International Women’s Day: Break The Bias
Today we celebrate International Women’s Day, giving us a chance to reflect on the important women in our lives, and celebrate their achievements.
This is also a time to reflect on the gender biases and inequality we see around us.
With women making up around 14% of construction industry professionals1, we are proud to have such a high male to female ratio, with 72% of the HPA team being female.
The theme for International Women’s Day 2022 is #BreakTheBias, bringing with it the drive to challenge stereotypes and push for a more diverse environment in our sector.
We strongly believe in creating equal opportunities for women in the architecture profession. From engaging with and mentoring girls and young people to enter the world of architecture through Escape 2 Make youth groups, to breaking trends with women in senior positions at HPA, we are always striving to #BreakTheBias. In the 2019 RIBA Journal, it was reported that 28% of architects were women. Although this statistic undoubtedly has room for improvement, this number had doubled over the previous 15 years:
“With overall numbers expanding there are now two and a half times more women architects than there were in 2003”-RIBA Grounds for optimism in improving profession’s diversity article.
