Luther King College: Creating Adaptable, Sustainable Spaces

HPA Architects have been appointed to lead the refurbishment of Luther King College’s campus in Manchester. The brief was straightforward but ambitious: consolidate facilities for three colleges and upgrade existing spaces to meet the needs of modern teaching, conferencing, and accommodation. The site, set within a mature landscape just two miles from the city centre, required a design approach that respected its heritage while delivering inclusive and sustainable spaces.

Understanding the Context

Founded in 1854, Luther King College has evolved from its Unitarian roots into a centre for theological education, welcoming students from diverse backgrounds. Today, it offers University of Manchester-validated programmes and provides accommodation for learners, conference delegates, and visitors. While the campus is valued for its tranquillity, the existing buildings and infrastructure needed significant upgrades to support contemporary learning and conferencing.

Our Approach

The project began with detailed engagement. Trustees, staff, and students shared priorities around safety, accessibility, and flexibility. This informed a condition survey and feasibility study, which highlighted structural issues, water ingress, and outdated systems. Strategic planning ensured proposals aligned with the College’s long-term objectives.

We developed a series of design options, from modest interventions to comprehensive redevelopment. The preferred scheme introduces improved accessibility through new lifts, enhanced safeguarding measures, and adaptable teaching and meeting spaces. Communal areas – including the chapel, dining hall, and library – will be refurbished to support collaboration and spiritual life. Sustainability and inclusivity were central to every decision.

The Proposal

The transformation will be delivered in phases, allowing the campus to remain operational throughout. Key improvements include:

The scheme reflects the College’s commitment to creating a modern, inclusive environment while preserving its historic character, and the design team are now moving to detailed design.
