HPA Attends 2026 Building Limes Forum Conference & Gathering
Earlier in September, HPA Director Zoë Hooton along with Associate Emma Brown, travelled to Newcastle for the 2026 The Building Limes Forum Conference & Gathering.
Based at Northumbria University, the three day event was divided between lectures and presentations held on campus, and Jarrow Hall Anglo-Saxon village, where practical activities took place. There were also other visits and tours, including the University’s materials testing labs, Tynemouth Castle & Priory and Seaton Delaval Hall.
What is The Building Limes Forum?
The Building Limes Forum exists to allow members to share experience, information and opinion; many of its members are producers, suppliers, specifiers or users of lime.
Building limes have been used for more than 2,000 years, initially acting as the principal binder for major building and civil engineering projects of the Roman Empire. Lime continued to be used for many different constructions, including houses, castles, cathedrals, bridges and other structures. Lime was also used for internal and external decoration, until the development of Portland cement in the mid-late nineteenth century. Where these structures still stand, it is important to use lime for their repair and conservation.
2026 BLF Conference & Gathering
The BLF Conference & Gathering is an annual event, consisting of a mixture of presentations and lectures, as well as practical demonstrations and hands-on workshops.

HPA continues to champion best practices and innovation in conservation architecture through its ongoing engagement with industry organisations like The Building Limes Forum.
