HPA Achieve Planning Permission for Carpenter’s Arms, Lacock
HPA are thrilled to have received planning approval for the refurbishment of the Grade II Listed Carpenter’s Arms, on behalf of long term HPA client, Stonegate Ltd.
The Carpenter’s Arms is located in the prestigious village of Lacock, a designated Conservation Area, which is managed by the National Trust. HPA have worked to create a proposal which carefully considers the National Trust’s Conservation Management Plan and the building’s heritage, whilst regenerating and reinvigorating the public house.
Informed by an in-house Heritage Assessment, HPA’s proposal seeks to sensitively restore the main building. The timber framed and clad garage, which was added to the rear in the 1930s, will be demolished to allow for construction of a higher quality and more thermally efficient extension. This will reinstate the natural stone of the original building, housing restaurant seating and guest accommodation above. By incorporating local design features and materiality, the scheme preserves and enhances the building’s character, reflecting the form and fabric which defines Lacock.
The planning permission granted will see the addition of 7 ensuite bedrooms and an extension of the kitchen area, transforming the site into a gastropub and tourist destination for the village. This positive contribution to the local area, alongside HPA’s approach to sustainability, is key to the success of the planning proposal, reinstating the Carpenter’s Arms as an asset to the village.
