Heritage Open Days 2024 – Explore Lancaster’s Rich Heritage
This year, the 6th to 15th September marks the week of Heritage Open Days 2024 – England’s largest festival of history and culture!
With a passion for working with heritage structures, listed buildings, and historic places, our goal at HPA Architects is to conserve and regenerate heritage buildings responsibly and sustainably for the benefit of this and future generations.
Each September there are thousands of free Heritage Open Days events offering guided tours, talks, walks and much more taking place throughout the UK.
HPA Architects are proud to have worked on many of the buildings where events are taking place such as Lancaster Grand Theatre, Christ Church Lancaster, Lancaster Castle, St Johns Church, and many, many more.
Just a few of the events taking place around Lancaster include:
8th September 2024 – The Lancaster Grand Theatre Tour
HPA worked on behalf of Lancaster Footlights Trust to devise a scheme for the repair of the façade of Lancaster Grand Theatre. The project was funded by Lancaster Heritage Action Zone, a collaborative regeneration scheme run in partnership between Historic England and Lancaster City Council. The property is designated as a Grade II listed building. The building first opened its doors as ‘The Theatre, Lancaster’ in 1782.
8th September 2024 – Lancaster Quaker Meeting House
Quakers first worshipped in Lancaster in 1652 at first in each others homes until a Meeting House was built. The present building is one of the oldest in Lancaster surrounded by a burial ground.
6th-14th September 2024 Storey Gardens Discovery Trial
Discover the links between The Storey building and the associated walled gardens of fruits & flowers. Follow The Tasting Garden tree-shaped path network to fruit trees and new fruit sculptures!
7th & 8th September 2024 Judges’ Lodgings Museum – Free Admission
A rare opportunity to visit the oldest townhouse in Lancaster for free!
7th & 8th September 2024 Lancaster Castle Tours
Free guided tours of Lancaster Castle. These will visit the courtyard, C Wing, The Old Cells, Hadrian’s Tower, The Shire Hall, The Grand Jury Room, The Crown Court, and The Drop Room, plus much more!
14th September 2024 Lancaster Priory Tour
The Mother Church of the City of Lancaster, Lancaster Priory is a Grade 1 listed building, located on a site which has seen Christian worship since Saxon times.
7th & 14th September 2024 Christ Church Lancaster Tour
HPA assisted Christ Church, Lancaster, with a restoration project that would see the church bells ringing again after more than three decades. The bell tower at the Grade II Listed Christ Church, which dates back to 1857, underwent a refurbishment which included repairs to the church bell fittings and the re-erection of a second bell which fell in 1984.
