From Contemporary Vision to Sustainable Reality in the Arnside & Silverdale National Landscape

Construction of a striking new family home in Silverdale, Lancashire, is nearing completion – and setting a benchmark for sustainable living. Designed by HPA Architects to Passivhaus standards, this two-storey dwelling replaces a tired 1950s bungalow that offered poor thermal performance and an EPC rating of E.

From the outset, the client’s vision was clear: create a modern, energy-efficient home that respects its setting within the Arnside & Silverdale National Landscape (formerly AONB). The design responds to this brief by retaining mature woodland and biodiversity on site, limiting construction to previously developed land.

Sustainability at the Core

The new three-bedroom home achieves an EPC rating of A and incorporates key Passivhaus principles including:

Design That Connects Inside and Out

Large corner windows and full-height glazing flood the open-plan living spaces with natural light and woodland views. Externally, a rubble stone plinth and charred timber cladding blend seamlessly with the rural landscape, while timber finishes and stone flooring inside resonate with the natural surroundings.

This use of natural materials was a deliberate choice to both blend with the rural landscape and echo the nearby woodland. The interior of the dwellings continues this with extensive use of timber for all feature walls, the first-floor flooring and joinery.

The existing driveway and entrance have been enlarged to enable safer access to the property and allow for two parking spaces. The garden wraps around the house with a patio and lawn to the south of the site.

Thoughtful Layout for Modern Living

A dramatic double-height entrance hall leads to an open-plan kitchen, dining, and lounge area with panoramic garden views. Upstairs, the master suite includes an en-suite and dressing room, complemented by two spacious bedrooms and a family bathroom.

HPA is proud to deliver projects that combine architectural excellence with environmental responsibility. This home reflects our commitment to sustainable design and enhancing the character of the local area, and we’re excited to see it become a lasting example of how architecture can harmonise with nature.
