Construction works start on Phase 3 of the Sixth Form Building at Furness College
Furness College has been undergoing an exciting programme of improvement works in select parts of the Sixth Form Building. HPA have lead the project from the initial feasibility stage and throughout construction, alongside a dedicated team of staff from the college. Phase 3 will see a new reception and welcoming entrance area with improved central circulation. It will provide creative study spaces more akin to higher education experiences.
HPA’s interventions focus on making energy efficiency a priority. The incorporation of new services, energy-efficient lighting, and targeted thermal improvements in heating systems contribute to cost savings in the running of the college, and align with broader sustainability goals. Additional specialised spaces have been created for Physics and Textiles, alongside a digital upgrade with industry standard equipment in the Theatre. The works have been carefully managed by contractor Pinnington Ltd.
This final phase of work at the Sixth Form College is part of a 14 month programme of works. These works have been made possible thanks to funding from the Brilliant Barrow Town Deal, which aims to help the town and its community to thrive for years to come. Further funding has been sought via a grant from the Government’s ‘Further Education Capital Transformation Fund’, in addition to investment from Furness College.
External works, which include planting to both prevent overheating and improve biodiversity, have been implemented. Internally, a colour blocking approach has been designed with the Sixth Form to assist in navigation and direct visitors and students more easily through the building.
The works are part of a wider initiative to create a ‘Learning Quarter’ in Barrow to give access to further education.
