Celebrating Success With Architectural Assistant Beth

Here at HPA we never stop learning and are committed to continuous improvement, developing the knowledge and skills of the whole team to drive new ideas and innovations that build on our experience.

Having completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Liverpool, HPA Architectural Assistant Beth Clarkson decided to return for her Master’s in September 2022. Over the next two years, she had the privilege of working on various projects based in Italy. Her fourth-year projects, centered in Milan, earned Beth the P S Tyson Prize for the best engagement with technology design work.

In the first semester of her fifth year, Beth participated in a semester exchange program at the University of Technology Sydney. Beth notes this incredible experience broadened her perspective on architectural design. During the semester, she worked on a project focused on creating adaptable prefabricated housing to address Australia’s ongoing housing crisis. She also spent six weeks traveling along the east coast of Australia, and wrote her dissertation on the effects of flood resilience strategies on the biodiversity and ecology of urban areas, examining case studies in Australia.

For the second semester, Beth returned to Liverpool to complete her thesis, which addressed the issue of unsustainable tourism in Rome. The project proposed an architectural solution to facilitate diverse and sustainable ways to tour the city. Centred on Forte Appia Antica along the Appian Way, her thesis demonstrated the potential for repurposing abandoned military architecture in Rome and across Europe. This work earned The Lionel Stirgess Architecture and Landscape Design Award – 2nd Prize and the 2024 RIBA Silver Nomination.

Beth is passionate about heritage, community engagement, and creating environmentally responsive designs, which she believes are essential for producing impactful and lasting architecture. Her future goal is to gain more experience in these areas as she continues her architectural journey and she hopes to design sustainable and innovative solutions that address global challenges, such as climate change and urbanisation to make a meaningful impact in the field of architecture.

At HPA we believe we have a collective responsibility to create places that significantly reduce the impact on our environment. Our thoughtful design culture reinforces our belief in making every project as sustainable as possible, and we are delighted that Beth is able to join us in delivering sustainability for our clients.
