Building Futures: Encouraging Careers at Cartmel Priory Careers Fair

This week, HPA Architects’ Planning Consultant Lynn Bailey MRTPI and Architectural Assistant John Meakin attended the Cartmel Priory School Careers Fair – an annual event for Year 10 and 11 pupils exploring their future career paths. We were proud to be one of over 20 local businesses, sixth forms, colleges, and apprenticeship providers supporting the event.

Welcoming students and parents to our stand, Lynn and John aimed to demystify the professions of Architecture and Planning, encouraging young people to consider careers in the built environment. Using the example of a recent Passivhaus project in Silverdale, they walked students through the creative journey of designing a home – from initial concept, through planning, and into construction.

As a post-Part I student currently undertaking his year in practice with HPA Architects, John offered a unique perspective on life at university and how academic theory translates into real-world experience. His insights helped bridge the gap between education and practice, giving students a clearer picture of what a career in Architecture might look like.

The event was well-attended by pupils and their families seeking guidance on post-16 options. Year 9 students were also invited to gain early insight into the choices available to them before selecting their GCSE subjects in December.

At HPA, we believe architecture is about more than designing buildings – it’s about shaping communities, solving problems creatively, and leaving a legacy of thoughtful design. As a learning organisation, we are deeply committed to inspiring the next generation of Architects and nurturing emerging talent through meaningful engagement and educational opportunities.
