Brick, Flint & Thatch: A Modern Interpretation of Tradition
Set within the Wiltshire countryside, a thatched gatehouse lodge has been designed as both a functional arrival point to a larger estate and a carefully considered architectural statement. Our ambition was to create a building that feels entirely at home within its landscape – one that appears as though it has always been there.
Located within the open countryside of the North Wessex Downs National Landscape, formerly the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), the lodge serves as both a welcoming entrance and a discreet security feature for the estate. The design draws directly from the local vernacular, boasting a thatched roof alongside traditional brick and flint to reflect the established character of the region.
The approach was informed by a close study of local forms and materials. Rather than replicate historic buildings, the design interprets them – using familiar proportions, simple forms, and a restrained material palette to create a building that is authentic without becoming pastiche.
Careful siting and landscape integration were central to the scheme. The gatehouse has been positioned to work with the existing landform and surrounding planting, ensuring it sits naturally within its setting and forms a subtle but well-defined point of arrival.
Craftsmanship and traditional methods have played a key role throughout. The use of thatch, combined with brick and flint construction, reflects time-honoured building techniques and supports a building that will age gracefully over time. Intricate straw finials – the thatcher’s signature – sit at the ridge in the form of a duck and her ducklings. Whilst purely decorative today, they are a nod to the cultural heritage of the area.
Attention to detail underpins the whole design – from the proportions of the roof to the junctions between materials. By focusing on simplicity, quality, and precision, the gatehouse achieves a quiet confidence that enhances both its immediate setting and the wider country estate.
