Bendrigg Trust Project Taking Shape
Work is underway on a project to create a new ‘accessible for all’ accommodation suite at an adventure and activity centre near Kendal. HPA designed the fully-wheelchair accessible: Acorn House development on behalf of the Bendrigg Trust, which provides action and adventure breaks for disabled and disadvantaged people.
The £1.32M scheme at Bendrigg Lodge, Old Hutton, will offer 24 beds over 10 ensuite rooms, a central lounge, kitchen, and dining area, replacing an outdated annexe that was not wheelchair accessible. The new building is expected to open to visitors from May 2017.
Zoe Hooton, HPA director, said: “Acorn House will allow Bendrigg Trust to continue to support more people with severe and profound disabilities to access the outdoors. This has been a very enjoyable and fulfilling project to be involved in, particularly as we’ve supported it through our own fundraising efforts as a practice and have worked with the trust for many years. My own extended family have stayed at Bendrigg too, so I know what a special place it is for families.”
Bendrigg Trust is still looking to raise an additional £163,516 to complete the project, mainly for the specialist fixtures and fittings required, such as beds, mattresses, hoisting systems, shower beds, and height adjustable dining tables.
