Behind the Magic as Lancaster on Ice Returns

As preparations begin for Lancaster on Ice 2025/26, we take a moment to reflect on the collaborative effort behind the magic, helping the event to become bigger, brighter, and more magical than ever this year. Now in its eighth year, this much-loved winter event is once again transforming Dalton Square, Lancaster, into a festive wonderland, and our practice is proud to support its welcome return.

Launched in 2018 by Hannah and Martin Horner, owners of The Borough, Lancaster on Ice has since grown into one of the region’s most anticipated seasonal events. From the very beginning HPA Architects has worked closely with the organisers, providing ongoing architectural and planning support to help evolve the event year after year.

Behind the scenes, HPA played a supportive role in enabling Lancaster on Ice to flourish within the historic setting of Dalton Square, providing comprehensive planning application support that celebrated and safeguarded the area’s architectural heritage. Dalton Square is framed by a number of Grade II listed buildings, including Lancaster Town Hall, the Queen Victoria Memorial, and the elegant façades of surrounding civic structures. We ensured that the event’s layout and infrastructure respected these heritage assets while enhancing the visitor experience for thousands of ice skaters and guests, creating a unique opportunity for visitors to celebrate the festive season within this beautiful heritage setting.

In addition to heritage and conservation guidance, HPA delivered site layout planning to ensure the safe and efficient use of the square, including accessibility design for the 800m² real ice rink and surrounding attractions. The practice also oversaw consultation with Lancaster City Council and key stakeholders, and provided infrastructure support for temporary installations such as the giant tipi bar, Christmas Market stalls, and the 120-foot Ferris wheel – Europe’s largest portable observation wheel. Through thoughtful design and strategic coordination, HPA has been proud to support this local initiative in becoming a nationally recognised winter destination, all while honouring the historic character of one of Lancaster’s most treasured public spaces.

 National Recognition

Lancaster on Ice has received widespread acclaim, being Winner of the Lancashire Tourism Awards ‘Large Event Award’ in 2019 and named one of the best ice rinks in the UK and Europe by The Guardian.

With its fully accessible ice rink, towering Ferris wheel, and festive market atmosphere, it’s easy to see why visitors return year after year. The event’s layout wraps around the Queen Victoria Memorial, making it one of the most unique skating experiences in the UK.

 Economic Impact

Lancaster on Ice isn’t just a festive treat for visitors, as the event facilitates a significant boost for the local economy, attracting over 90,000 visitors and creating a significant increase in city centre footfall – a much-appreciated boost to Lancaster’s high street and the wealth of local independent businesses trading in the city.

 Save the Date

Lancaster on Ice returns to Dalton Square from 21st November 2025 to 4th January 2026. Whether you’re gliding across the ice, browsing festive stalls, or taking in the views of our historic city from the Ferris wheel, this is a winter experience not to be missed.
