Associate Emma Brown Marks International Day Of Sign Language
23rd September 2025 marks International Day of Sign Languages (IDSL), with this year’s theme being “No Human Rights Without Sign Language Rights.”
Associate Architect Emma Brown attended a Sub36 networking event held at The Deaf Village on Preston Old Rd, Blackburn, Lancashire BB2 5EN — a truly unique space making a big difference for the hearing impaired and their families across Lancashire.
After a guided tour of The Deaf Village, Emma learned how to sign her name and company name in British Sign Language (BSL), as well as some everyday BSL phrases. The group of like-minded young professionals also took part in some fun deaf-awareness games to challenge understanding and communication skills in a relaxed and engaging environment.
Established by the United Nations General Assembly, IDSL recognises the importance of sign languages in the realisation of human rights for deaf people across the globe.
At the heart of this experience is our company’s values of collaboration and consideration. We care deeply about people and the places we create for them. Emma’s visit to The Deaf Village reflects our commitment to designing thoughtful, balanced, and inclusive spaces that are accessible and sustainable — and that ultimately achieve their purpose. By engaging with communities and embracing inclusive design, we aim to foster environments where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.
