The Herbarium is an exciting plant-based café and yoga studio in Lancaster city centre’s historic conservation area.
The project saw a dilapidated heritage building in Great John Street, previously occupied by an outdoor apparel and fishing tackle business, refurbished to create a multi-use space aimed at all audiences.
HPA worked with local entrepreneurs Natalie Temple and Lucie Carrington on the project, helping secure the necessary Listed-Building consents and Planning Permission for a change of use. The team also advised and assisted with the construction alterations to the building.

These alterations included the removal of internal stud walls, creating an increase in usable space within the building. Two original fireplaces were revealed during construction and these were opened back up and restored as new features. Other original features, including a door and window, were also reinstated as part of the project.
Planning Consent for the project was difficult to secure due to the multiple building uses required by such a niche lifestyle business, but HPA’s Planning expertise allowed all obstacles to be overcome.
