This innovative housing project saw HPA draw up plans to revitalise a former cinema building in the heart of Lancaster with new apartment development.
The five-storey building was designed to sit within the Lancaster City Conservation Area on a site adjacent to the historic Dalton Square. A flexible design enables the development to be used as either high-quality student accommodation or as a luxury aparthotel.
It allows the façade and cinema foyer of 13 Dalton Square to be retained as part of the housing project, while the dilapidated cinema auditorium would make way for new one and two-bedroom and studio apartments. Original features within the former cinema foyer facing Dalton Square would be refurbished and the façade of the building improved through a more vibrant shopfront.
The 15,590 sq ft apartment utilises stone cladding to match the appearance of other buildings in the vicinity. A flat roof, clad in zinc, enables the building to blend with its surroundings.
