Hornby Institute - HPA

This project demonstrated how an historic building can be given a new lease of life with a great deal of care and attention.

HPA was first approached to look at Hornby Village Hall back in 1998. Over the years the practice worked closely with the local community to develop a scheme to restore and rejuvenate this listed building. Eventually enough money was raised for the work to go ahead through fundraising and a number of successful grant applications.

The building has been restored to its former glory while complying to tough modern legislation. Most of the original features have been retained and restored, and a number of new interventions have been designed to complement the style of the original building.

The scheme won the prestigious Community Benefit category of the RICS North-West Awards, and received a commendation in the RICS National Awards.
